Cycle Sync is a concept for a location-based phone application that aims to provide cyclists with an effective wayfinding system that works through their smartphone. Cycle Sync works
by culminating locals’ knowledge of their surrounding area to provide users with a comprehensive, community driven database of journeys and routes to wherever they may be looking to go.
Cycle Sync is usable on the move: intuitive controls prevent the need for physical interaction with the phone whilst riding a bike—as detailed above. Using geolocation and the smartphone’s camera, the automated wayfinding system works while you cycle, providing the cyclist with on-screen visual instructions for each step of the way.
On top of this, Cycle Sync is also part conceived as a social platform for cyclists to connect and share their experiences with others. Users can benefit from their own personal profiles, where they can share information about themselves; such as their recent journeys, photographs they have taken, or the distance they have cycled in the last month, for example.
Individual accounts will be given to users of Cycle Sync to give them a personal identity, and also to group and organise information contributed by them. Users will have a sign in name and password of their choice which will be entered when the App is first used. By having their own account users will have access to personalised settings, such as privacy and interface customisation.
The home interface is a portal for access to different features of Cycle Sync. The main features are listed with large buttons for quick access to most used tools. Shown here are also most recent updates, such as the activity of friends, or news routes that have been added in the local area.
Cycle Sync also offers personalised pages for each user of the App to share information about themselves, their photos, places they have visited, routes they have taken, or their general thoughts. Users can interact via profile pages, with the ability make comments, add new friends, tag photos, and even use the routes that others have cycled in the past.
The Journey Viewer is a universal interface for collecting relevant information about any given route available through the App. This information is presented as visual maps, duration of journey, distance, who it had been submitted by, ratings and comments, etc. Users will also be able to access a text formatted list of directions, and snapshots of the route to give them a more detailed detailed insight into what the route entails.
The Nearby feature will show a map of the users’ current surroundings, pin-pointing places of interest or journeys that have been submitted by others in a similar vicinity. Users will also have a choice to make their own location public for others to see.
Using the phone’s camera, the location snapping feature allow users to take photos of places they have visited on their bike. This gives other users of the App a clearer insight into certain routes, or can simply function as a gallery of places visited in the past.
Much like any other social network, Cycle Sync has a Friends feature for interacting and sharing information with the people you know. Shown here is a searchable list of friends that lead to more comprehensive details, such as contact information, statistics and the user’s personal profile page.
For each submitted route users will have an opportunity to submit a written review to share their opinions and advise other potential users of the route. Users can also provide a star-based rating, where the average rating is then used to categorise the route amongst others.
The Journey Recording feature of the App will enable users to record their routes. These routes can be shared with other users, or just saved for their own future reference. When using this feature users will see a live textual listing of their current route in individual steps, as well as the duration of the trip so far.
