BBC Archive
For many the BBC’s broadcast archive holds a wealth of undiscovered material. As yet, much of it remains undiscovered as there is currently no platform for audiences to rediscover and explore this content. The BBC have made a small portion of this material available online as they continue to make the transfer to the digital space.
This reinvention of the BBC Archive website was my entry for the 2011 D&AD Student Awards. As stated by the brief, the task was to Design a platform for the BBC Archive that brings to life its cultural riches for audiences to enjoy now and in the future. The challenge was to create a platform that could reinvigorate this content, and help audiences to discover it in ways they may not expect. My solution was to reinterpret their vast catalogue as a collection of narratives and stories to link together various material—whether in the form of video, image, or sound—showcasing them chronologically, forming a detailed summary for whatever the material may be. This works to the advantage of new audiences who may only be discovering for the first time, via a platform more familiar with the ways in which we experience broadcasting today.
